Review of BF Goodrich Tires - g-Force T/A KDW

Cooper Tires

Positioned as a Ultra High Performance Summer tire, BF Goodrich Tires g-Force T/A KDW's were was developed to bring a mix of both dry and wet road performance. Tire reviews don't support the claims by BF Goodrich that the KDW's are smooth and quiet, but this is a give-and-take feature.

The unidirectional tread design was developed to increase performance in dry and wet road handling, while the large CAD-designed tread features are meant to increase stability and tire life. The shoulder profile is rounded to improve progressively and make the KDW's more predictable.

Hydroplaning is reduced by the deep/wide grooves that quickly evacuate water. This benefit of reduced hydroplaning is supported by the online tire reviews. An increased interior-groove-offset improves the traction in snow conditions, while adding to the handling performance in both wet and dry conditions. The tire speed rating W for speeds up to 168 mpg, and M&S for mud and snow. Note that the reviews on these BF Goodrich tires don't support a great deal of confidence in snow. These tires should not be driven in freezing temperatures or through heavy snow. Where this tire shines is in it's handling and performance for summer and wet conditions.

The tread design on the KDW's can also be seen in in BF Goodrich Tires g-Force T/A radial racing tires that are used in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans Am Series. BF Goodrich has developed a technology called ETEC (Equal TEnsion Containment) that is used to reinforce the twin steal belts on these tires. This uses nylon strips that are wound in a spiral design to add strength and consistent pressure in the contact area. It reduces weight of the tire and provides a more uniform ride quality. Deflection and generate cornering force is reduced with BF Goodrich's g-Control sidewall inserts. In addition, rim protector ribs protect alloy wheels from curb damage.

Positive Online Tire Review Comments:

  • "I was impressed with the responsiveness of these tires, especially in regards to steering input. These tires have a great road feel."

  • "Great performance tire. 1/4 mile times went from 14.1's to 13.8's because of the awesome grip level of these tires"

  • "Picked these up at Sears Tire center last year. These tires added to the feel of the car as well as the overall performance. I also think they are about the best looking tires out there."

  • "Just replaced my Michelin Pilot Sport Tires with the KDW's. What an improvement!! I barely got 10K miles on the Pilot Sports, and the BF Goodrich tires have a lot less road noise. Handling is superb."

  • "Better than advertised. I was warned that these tires were noisy but they were not nearly as bad as I feared. They appear to be wearing better than OEM tires. I hope to get 20K miles."

  • "I'm so impressed with these tires that I'm about to purchase another set for our other car. Dry traction is fantastic for aggressive driving. Driving in wet weather is awesome!! Water is nicely channeled away."

  • "I have owned various tires including Continental, Kumho, and Nittos. I will certainly be putting these BF Goodrich tires on my other fast cars."

  • "After reading tons of tire reviews I bought the KDW's. For the money, these are very good tires. I love the aggressive look of these tires."

  • "As for traction and handling...turn-in was crisp and light, my line through the corner was solid. Usually I can feel the tire's sidewall flex and the car come off line as it begins to drift through the corner. These felt really good. "

  • "The gap in the tread is huge. Water just channels out easily at highway speeds. A very secure feeling in wet weather driving"

  • "Amazing dry traction!! I found it hard to to spin these tires. Great grip through cornering. Road noise wasn't too bad. Love the tread pattern!"

  • "I've replaced the factory Goodyear Eagle RSA's with the BFG g-Force KDW's and love them! I'm an aggressive driver and I rarely hear a squeak out of them, or a skid in cornering."

Negative (and mixed) Reviews:

  • "I love the traction on the g-Force KDW's, but they are very noisy"

  • "Great dry traction and feel good in wet driving conditions. The drawback is a lot of road noise and the tires wear out fast."

  • "These are really good tires for the price. They have a very good feel if you like sportiness in your driving. These tires let you feel the road a bit but I think that is a good thing. Its not what I would call harsh, you just feel it."

  • "The first thing I noticed was the increased tire noise. My car is well insulated but the road noise just resonates into the cabin. I knew this ahead of time so it wasn't too big a shock. "

  • "If they could tame the road noise, this would be a great tire. The performance alone has me debating buying them again but I would like to get back to a quieter ride so I'll likely choose another next round. ""

  • "The performance is very good in dry/wet condition. I have put over 35,000 miles in over 2 years they have been great. Would recommend, but I have heard the 2nd generation tires are even better. I will probably get them when it is time."

Final thoughts from on these BF Goodrich Tires:

The BF Goodrich g-Force KDW's certainly have their share of mixed reviews. All in all, there appears to be agreement that the performance on these tires is outstanding. If you're an aggressive drive and need your tires to really perform in dry summer weather (or light rain), then these may be the tires for you.

The KDW's are excellent in cornering, and breaking capabilities are outstanding in both dry and wet. Superb steering response and control is amazing even at high speeds. The wear on these tires isn't the best, but that is to be expected with an "Ultra Performance Summer Tire". Those aggressive drivers that really push their tires won't be disappointed with the rate of wear on these tires. It's all about expectations.

People describe the ride to driving on rails (in both dry and wet conditions), and most people say that they are surprised with the traction. The reviews have a lot of the talk about the road noise. If you are looking for a quiet tire then this particular set of BF Goodrich Tires may not be for you. Many tire reviews say that the noise wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. It appears that truly aggressive drivers are not deterred by the noise.
